The Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) has released operational guidelines this week for admissions to classes 9 and 11 at the Dr BR Ambedkar Schools of Specialised Excellence (ASoSEs) and announced an aptitude test to be conducted for the same during January 16-31, 2024.
The government established ASoSEs across Delhi in 2021 to align with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 so that students with a deep interest and aptitude in a particular domain and are affiliated with the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) get specialised learning opportunities from the secondary school (classes 9 to 12) stage.
ASoSeS are choice-based schools and each school offers specialised courses like Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities, Performing Arts, and High-end 21st Century skills, besides Armed Forces Preparatory Schools (AFPS).
The official website of ASoSEs states that they “are designed as per the philosophy of DBSE that centers around moving away from rote memorisation through integrating assessment into the everyday practice of teaching -learning and using assessments for learning… DBSE is collaborating with the International Baccalaureate (IB), a global community of educationists, that engaged with 5,500 schools across 159 countries.”
As per the notification, admissions shall be offered in Class 9 in all ASoSEs and against all vacant seats in STEM-ASoSEs and Humanities-ASoSEs.
A minimum of 75 per cent aggregate marks (best of five, including science and mathematics ) will be required for students aiming to get into these schools in classes 9 and 11, and an additional relaxation of 5 per cent in eligibility marks is offered to candidates from reserved categories as per the DoE policy.
At least 50 per cent of the seats in each ASoSE will be filled by students from government or government-aided schools in Delhi and the remaining seats will be available for students studying in any recognised school in Delhi.
