Former chairperson of CBSE Ashok Ganguly, who had formulated the100-point system for nursery admissions has said the there is every likelihood that admissions this year could get chaotic.
There should have been be a clearcut framework given to schools. Everything has been left to the schools to decide. There is every likelihood that confusion and doubtful situations may prevail, Ganguly told Newsline.
Gangulys 100-point system was followed by the city schools for three years. The Ganguly Committee was appointed by the Delhi High Court to streamline the nursery admissions in the Capital.
Speaking on the decision to give a free hand to the private schools,Ganguly said,In the Capital, there is a gap between the number of applicants and the number of seats available. There has to be a clearcut framework for the schools to follow.
About the Management quota,Ganguly said: The Ganguly Committee had recommended that schools can have 10 to 15 per cent seats reserved for the management quota. If the government has not put any cap on the management quota, then that can lead to many issues.
The Ganguly Committees point system asked schools to allot points to applicants on the basis of criteria like neighbourhood, sibling, alumni, girl child, single parent, etc.
It is very essential (in the wake of the RTE Act) that schools first shortlist the candidates,on the basis of lottery, and then apply some criteria, he said. If a school gets 2,000 applications,it can first shortlist 300-400 applicants and then apply some criteria to these 300-400. Because you cannot ignore the neighbourhood factor.
