Actor denies role in suicide case

More than a month after Ruchi Bhuttan’s body was found hanging in her house, model turned actor Meera Chopra, against whom the police had lodged an FIR

Ruchi death: Did not have a affair with victim’s husband, says Meera Chopra

More than a month after Ruchi Bhuttan’s body was found hanging in her house, model turned actor Meera Chopra, against whom the police had lodged an FIR,presented herself before the DLF Phase II police on Saturday.

She is accused of driving Ruchi to suicide after the latter got to know of her alleged relationship with her husband Sumit Bhuttan.

Coming before the media for the first time since Bhuttan’s death,Meera denied any link with the incident and said the police had no proof at all about her alleged role in the case. “I used to know Sumit (Ruchi’s husband) eight years ago. But,I did not have any ongoing relationship with him,” said Meera.

She alleged that the charges against her were fabricated. When asked about the diary submitted by Ruchi Bhuttan’s family which reportedly mentions her name, she said,“Having anybody’s name in a diary does not mean involvement in a case. The diary also has other people’s names possibly. Does that mean they are all involved in the case?”

Meera submitted her phone to the police for examination.

She claimed that the case was taking a toll in her career and that she missed out on two movie projects as she had to appear before police.

Ruchi was found hanging from a fan at her DLF Phase II residence on June 28. Her husband was arrested in this connection and is in judicial custody. The victim’s family has alleged that their daughter was murdered by Sumit and his family after she got to know about his affair with Meera.

A city court had earlier dismissed Meera’s anticipatory bail application but she approached the Punjab and Haryana High court, which stayed her arrest till August 24.

“Since the High Court has stayed the arrest, the police will question her on her alleged links. We have asked her many questions regarding the case,” said Maheswar Dayal,DCP (East).
