She may not be one of the ladies in competition for the top slot in Bollywood, but Neha Dhupia is enjoying an enviable career. The actress has spent six years in the industry and has been a part of nearly a dozen commercial successes with roles in films like Garam Masala,Singh is Kingg,Shootout at Lokhandwala and De Dana Dan. Two years ago,she crossed over to indie cinema and proved herself as an actress with Rajat Kapoors Mithya and has since been a part of his clique.
Today, she is striking a fine balance between both big budget films and indie cinema and has,at the same time, marked an international presence with her two American tele-series,Bollywood Hero and Jessica Simpsons Price of Beauty. Commercial success is important for recognition but the small budget films are more satisfying as an actor. The best way I can sum up the difference between being a part of a big budget and a small budget film that on the sets of the former, everyone is a star whereas while shooting for the latter, everyone is an actor, she quips.
Reminiscing her early days as an actress, she remarks,I have had my fair share of ups and downs. But I never had any fixed plans even when I competed for the Miss India title. Thats why I have never had great expectations or felt disappointed with my career, she explains. But now I intend to focus on roles that offer the opportunity to hone the actor in me.
True to her word,Dhupia will be seen in her first deglam role in With Love To Obama, which is set to release in August. Her role, that of a politician and modelled on Mayawati,is already being talked about. The movie is a satire on how last years worldwide recession has affected Indians in a small village as much as it has hit the Americans. For my role,it is chiefly the dialect and her manner of speaking that I have adapted. Mayawati has a brilliant way of stating important points in a matter-of-fact manner. I hope I have been able to manage that, she says. However, what excited her most about the role is the fact that she got a chance to handle firearms.
Having wrapped up the shoot of Vipul Shahs Action Replayy and the post-production for With Love To Obama, directed by debut director Subhash Kapoor, the 30-year-old is thrilled with the outcome. I have never been let down by first time directorsbe it Rajat Kapoor,Saurabh Shukla or Subhash. I saw the first cut two days ago and am very happy with the outcome. Next month, she begins researching for another debut director Rakesh Ranjan Kumars biopic My Friend Hitler. I play Eva Braun who is known to be Adolf Hitlers companion in his last days. To play such a character is what makes it worth being an actress.
