Following an announcement that Bollywood star Aamir Khan will be coming to Ramlila Maidan to express his support for Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign,Delhi Police stepped up security at the venue on Friday.

“We have been told that Aamir Khan is coming. We have not chalked out a strategy yet,but police presence will be intensified,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Vivek Kishore.

Meanwhile, police have started cracking down on Anna supporters, who have been flouting traffic norms and indulging in hooliganism. They booked more than 1,400 people in the last six days.

“Anna caps cannot replace helmets. From tonight,we will be putting up barricades around India Gate, and people will not be allowed to move around in large groups. Supporting Anna cannot be made an excuse for flouting traffic norms,” said Satyendra Garg,Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

As many as 189 people were booked for not wearing helmets near Ramlila Maidan and India Gate on Friday. Besides this, police patrolling was increased in areas surrounding Ramlila Maidan.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asked Delhi Police to go tough on people who were taking advantage of the anti-corruption movement to indulge in hooliganism. The traffic police were also asked to ensure discipline on roads.

“We have asked our personnel to patrol the streets more effectively,” Garg said. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and plain-clothed policemen were also deployed at the venue.

Police said they have towed away many motorcycles that were found obstructing the “contigency route” near Ramlila Maidan. About 20 motorcycles were taken away on Friday. The route is meant to effect smooth passage of Hazare’s ambulance if he needs to be shifted to the hospital during the course of the fast.

“All the approach roads to India Gate and Ramlila Maidan will be barricaded, and people will have to adhere to traffic norms. Jumping red lights seems to have become a mark of protest,” Garg said.
