Karan Pandit’s act as an eager young man who appears for a job interview that will change his life forever in The Interview won him applause,acclaim and,on Tuesday,the Best Actor award at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META). “A simple corporate comedy has got a big chance,” he announced.

For The Interview team — Akvarious Productions and Le Chayim Productions — the night was going to get bigger. Pandit’s win was accompanied by Kashin Shetty picking up the META for the Best Supporting Actor,and director Akarsh Khurana lifting the Best Play and the Best Stage Design awards.

But it was Ningthouja Deepak,director of Mythical Surrender,which followed The Interview’s success with three awards,who best described the mood of the evening. “Today is the greatest and sweetest day of my life,” he declared as the audience at the Taj Mansingh erupted into cheers. Mythical Surrender,revolving around the military operations in the Northeast,won awards for Best Original Script,Best Choreography and Best Innovative Sound Design.

Ahlam Khan of Aaj Rang Hai,would have understood Deepak’s sentiments,but the actor who won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) award could not make it to the ceremony. Her sister accepted the award. Marathi play Tichee 17 Prakarne,comprising 17 one acts,won the Best Director award besides prizes for the Best Ensemble and Best Lighting.
