Not too long ago,two men watched four future Olympians from the closest of quarters — as the quartet learned their ABCs in boxing under the youth category coach G Manoharan, working out of Pune, and national sub-junior and juniors coach MS Dhaka, based in Sonepat. They now analyse their former wards ,who will be travelling to London for the 2012 Olympics

Manoharan: L Devendro Singh is one of the most disciplined boxers in the entire group. Hailing from Manipur,he has a fantastic physique, and manages to maintain his weight very well. A few years ago,he would often lose to Nanao. But then, this time around,he surprised not only Nanao with a win in the trials, but also beat Amandeep with his straight punches and quick movements.

Dhaka: Sumit Sangwan is a very determined boxer and good at counter-boxing. The boy has the advantage of weight and will probably move up a category in the near future. Right now,he needs to compete more against boxers from the Asian powerhouses of boxing,China and Mongolia.

Manoharan: Confidence is the one big reason that makes Shiva Thapa a successful boxer. He has a sound technique and draws a lot of belief from that. Add to that his recent wins over some big names like world champion Detelin of Belgium and 2004 Olympics silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoon, his confidence levels will be right up there.

Manoharan: We had to be careful with Vikas Krishan when he was young. He is the most mischievous of the lot but a very composed boxer. He would spend a lot of time improving his defence and that has helped him a lot. We all saw that in the Asian Games final and he has so far done well in the 69 kg category, recovering well from the bout of dehydration last year.
