A 90-year-old woman was strangled by unknown assailants during a robbery in Northwest Delhis Rani Bagh area even as her grandchildren and their families slept in adjacent rooms. The door was ajar and I saw my grandmother lying there all tied up, said Maya Devis grandson Arvind Kocchar.
On the night of October 26,Maya Devi,a heart patient, had been tucked into bed after dinner by her grand daughter-in-law Rachna Kocchar. The hall light was kept on as usual as the old woman would often wake up to use the washroom. But,at 4 am,Arvind received a call from his father who was arriving in Delhi from Punjab. He asked me to pick him up from the station, he said.
Arvind (40) and his wife Rachna got ready and were about to leave for the station when they realised that their bedroom door was locked from outside. Realising that something was amiss,Arvind got out through a window. My grandmothers room is right opposite ours. I saw her lying tied up. She was dead, said Arvind. By then Rachna had alerted the tenants upstairs, who informed the police.
We are still trying to ascertain how many people must have broken in. Because the kitchen window was also open,it doesnt look like a one-man job, said a senior police officer. Mayas body was sent to the Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital in Sabzi Mandi for postmortem after which her body was cremated. Only after receiving the post-mortem report can we ascertain the external or internal injuries. Prima facie, the woman was strangled with a dupatta, said the officer.
DCP (Northwest) N S Bundela said,Robbery could have been the motive, but the stolen items amount to just Rs 2,000. A case of murder has been registered. Maya Devi and her family currently house 11 tenants in their two-storey building near Mahendra Park,Fawara Chowk.
