As part of its pilot project, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has installed close circuit television (CCTV) cameras on 80 of its buses to enhance security. The project was envisioned after the December 16 gangrape, to increase security for women commuters in the capital.
As part of the project, DTC aims to install cameras on 200 buses. This includes both low-floor AC and non-AC buses.
“Till now we have installed CCTV cameras on 80 DTC buses of the Rajghat depot. By October 17, we will complete our target of installing CCTV cameras on 100 buses in the depot,” DTC spokesperson R S Minhas said.
The project has specifically selected two depots — Rajghat and Sarojini Nagar — for installing cameras on 200 buses.
Officials also said that a control room has been set up at the Rajghat Depot where footage from the CCTV cameras will be monitored.
“The CCTV cameras have a capacity to record footage for seven hours. Besides, we will also store the footage of the past 15 hours in the control room,” an official said.
Officials said the pilot project has already started showing positive results.
In a recent incident where senior students of a private school repeatedly forced the driver to make stops at unauthorised locations, a bus with the CCTV cameras was sent on the route.
“We were able to record the activities of the children. This information was then handed to the school authorities concerned, thus solving the problem,” the official said.
However, officials admitted that the usefulness of the cameras to track theft or prevent sexual harassment is yet to be tested.
Earlier, a trial run was carried out by the DTC in collaboration with the Delhi Police. “Locations of where the cameras should be installed inside the buses was decided after consultation with police,” an official said.
