A 64-year-old businessman was shot dead by three motorcycle-borne assailants in the the Kotwali area near Rajghat on Saturday.
The police said Rajinder Pal Singh was on his way home to Krishna Nagar in East Delhi when the incident occurred. He had hired an autorickshaw from Chandni Chowk along with three others. The three assailants intercepted them near Shantivan around 10 pm, said an officer. They asked Singh to hand over his bag containing cash and valuables. When he resisted,one of the assailants shot him in the chest and thigh with a country-made revolver. The assailants then fled along with the bag.
Singh was rushed to Dr Walia Nursing Home where he was declared dead on arrival. The police were informed by Lakhbir Singh,the driver of the autorickshaw . A case has been registered at the Kotwali police station. We are taking the help of the autorickshaw driver and Singhs friends to prepare sketches of the accused, said a senior officer. Singh was a wholesale dealer in grains in the Lal Kuan market of Hauz Qazi.
The police suspect the involvement of an insider. Singhs family said he never carried more than Rs 1,000 with him. But on Saturday,he had received a payment of Rs 40,000 and was returning home with the cash, said the officer.
Singh,a resident of the Gopal Park area of Krishna Nagar,is survived by his wife and two sons.
