64-year-old held at IGI for smuggling

A Delhi resident was arrested by the Customs department for smuggling commercial goods valued at Rs 27 lakh on Thursday.

A Delhi resident was arrested by the Customs department for smuggling commercial goods valued at Rs 27 lakh on Thursday.

The accused,Darshan Lal (64),had landed at Terminal 3 of IGI Airport around 9 pm from Hong Kong by AI-0315. The Customs department,which was already working on intelligence inputs on Lal,intercepted him after he crossed immigration and was passing through the Green Channel.

“Detailed examination revealed an ultrasound portable scanner,valued at Rs 5 lakh,in his checked-in baggage and 13,300 pieces of 2 GB memory cards concealed in six sealed plastic-coated envelopes. Memory cards are valued at Rs 21.60 lakh. Besides,two bottles of single malt whisky,Glenmorangie,were also recovered from him,” a senior Customs official told Newsline.

Customs officials said Lal is a frequent flier and is under the scanner of Hong Kong authorities as well.

In his statement to the Customs’ department,Lal said the ultrasound machine was gifted to him and he was to get Rs 5,000 on delivering it to a source at the Delhi Airport.
