The 72-mm timepass
The producer-multiplex stalemate has provided a rare opportunity for non-mainstream films to make it to the theatres. The trend continues with Silent Light,a moving tale of a father’s moral and religious crisis as he grapples with love for another woman. Silent Light won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2007 and was on the year-end top-10 list of The New York Times,Sight and Sound and Newsweek among others. For those who still haven’t understood the healthcare debate during the US elections, here’s another chance to catch Michael Moore’s angry, controversial documentary Sicko, currently on at PVR Saket.

Catch the opening of the exhibition of abstract paintings on acrylic by Shalini Sinha at 6 pm on Friday at the All India Fine Arts and Craft Society on Rafi Marg. Kanchan Bagri’s paintings are on display at the same venue. At Triveni Kala Sangam,Anil Kumar Goswami’s works are part of an exhibition from May 22-31.

The field idea
If you are a sports buff, you need to go no further than your television set. The IPL reaches its climax with semifinals on Friday and Saturday, and the final on Sunday. Manchester United may have won the English Premier League but the fates of many other clubs will be decided on May 24. There’s also F1 action, with the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.

Exploring an idea
Feel the political buzz as you have a delicious lunch at Andhra Bhavan at 1,Ashoka Road. Or eavesdrop on debates about the Tamil issue in Sri Lanka and the surprising electoral verdict in the state at the Tamil Nadu Bhavan in Chanakyapuri. Or sit on the lawns at India Gate gazing at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, marvelling at how it has transformed from a colonial edifice into a symbol of India’s democratic strength.
