Three vice-presidents,five general managers and two Japanese advisers were among the 38 Maruti Suzuki India officials who sustained grievous injuries in the July 18 attack by unruly workers at the auto majors Manesar plant. Thirty have fractures in their hands, elbows and fingers while some have head, nasal and ear injuries or fractures in their legs.
It appears that senior officials were rounded up and attacked with iron rods by the workers. To shield themselves from head injuries, the officials tried to block the blows with their hands the reason why so many have fractures in their fingers, wrists and hands.
One of the injured said the first reaction was to cover the head. He said the workers targeted heads and legs. A head injury could have been dangerous and deadly. As the workers aimed their weapons like spares parts and iron rods at us,we knew they were going for the heads and legs. To prevent head injuries, all of us ducked and put our hands on heads. This has resulted in fractures and injuries at the joints, he said.
Of the 38 injured, three are vice-presidents,five general managers, seven deputy general managers, six senior managers, five managers and deputy managers, four senior executives, five supervisors, two Japanese advisers and a junior engineer who had come for training.
Other than the fractures,at least six have been admitted to ICUs,five have received stitches in the head, hands and ears, one has undergone an operation for rod fitment, another has been operated above the knee cap and one has a crack above the right thigh.
Of the 38 injured,16 were admitted to Artemis Hospital while 12 were taken to Medanta after initial aid at the District Hospital. Paras Hospital is treating three officials whereas five went to Columbia Asia. It is not clear where the remaining two are being treated.
But two Japanese advisors,Kenji Saijo and Shiga Toshi Tori, who were among the injured, are said to have left India after being discharged from hospital.
Kenji Saijos Facebook page designates him as an adviser,Maruti Suzuki Indias business operations. He had come to India in July 2011. From Mito-shi in the Ibaraki Prefecture,he studied at the Chiba Institute of Technology.
Both received multiple injuries and were admitted to a Gurgaon hospital for a brief period. Traumatised, both have returned to their country, a Maruti official said.
