The son of a local Samajwadi Party (SP) leader was shot dead allegedly by his uncle in Ghaziabad on Sunday following a dispute over a luxury car, police said.

Police said 31-year-old Prashant Kaushik, son of Samajwadi Party leader Sudhir Kaushik, died after his uncle Hari Mohan Kaushik, also a party leader, fired six shots from his licenced .32-caliber pistol at him around 1 am. Bullets hit him in the chest and head.

“Prashant and Hari Mohan,a former councillor of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation, were drinking whiskey inside the former’s new car parked outside his home in Shastri Nagar to celebrate a recent business deal. Soon after,Hari started arguing about Prashant’s Rs 26-lakh car,for which he had withdrawn money from their joint account,” Ghaziabad SP (City) Shiv Shankar Yadav said.

“Hari had withdrawn Rs 18 lakh three months ago for his SUV. He asked Prashant to pay him Rs 8 lakh, insisting that this will counterbalance the amount the nephew withdrew from their account. This led to a heated argument. Hari took out his pistol and fired,” he said.

Hearing the gunshots,Prashant’s brother Anurag Kaushik came out of their house and saw Hari fleeing. “Anurag called police and took his brother to a hospital. But he died on the way. The body was cremated in the evening after the autopsy,” a policeman said.
