Passengers panicked when smoke engulfed a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus on Nelamangala Highway Monday. The smoke was coming from six plastic cans containing 10 litres of acid each.

The police said the passengers began screaming. The driver and conductor stopped the bus and found the source of the smoke but could not locate the owner/s of the cans.

Fire and emergency service personnel were called to recover the cans. They cleaned the bus. Later, the Nelamangala town police seized the acid.

The conductor told the police a man boarded the bus at the RMC yard stop with the cans. He told the conductor he was carrying palm oil for a family function and bought a ticket to Kunigal. The passenger kept the cans with him on the bus.

When the bus reached the Nelamangala bypass, the cans began releasing smoke.
