Tamil Nadu Transport Minister S S Sivasankar said Wednesday that all State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) buses would give a 50 percent concession for passengers who book tickets in advance and travel more than five times in a month. The passengers would get the concession from their sixth trip onwards on the buses.
To encourage more women entrepreneurs, the government would provide priority to women self-help groups in running the canteens in government bus depots. The transport department would also set up air-conditioned resting rooms for employees at the depots.
Under the Ungal Thoguthiyil Muthalamaichar scheme, the transport department aims to set up a new bus depot at Kunnam in Perambalur district, to help people who commute to Perambalur, Ariyalur and other areas. This will be initiated at a cost of Rs 3.55 crore.
At Rs 10.76 crore, the bus depot and stand at Avadi in Tiruvallur district is set to be provided a facelift with concrete flooring, sheds with seating for passengers, high tower lights, etc.
The minister said there were around 315 bus depots in the state. Children of the transport department workers who secure top marks in classes 10 and 12 examination would be provided cash rewards. The department has set aside Rs 18.90 lakh for this initiative.
The transport department will also increase rewards for those who help to save lives in accidents. Sivasankar said that apart from the central government’s Rs 5,000 grant for Good Samaritans who provide immediate assistance to accident victims and help them rush to hospital within the golden hour of the accident, the state government would provide an additional Rs 5,000.
