Soon, open air theatre, exhibition pavilions, urban plaza at Island Grounds
The project, which was announced during the budget session by former finance minister Palanivel Thiagarajan, is estimated to cost Rs 50 crore.

A team of officials of Tamil Nadu government visited the Island grounds in Chennai on Wednesday where the government has earmarked 30 acres of land to set up various amenities, including an open air theatre, urban plaza, food court, landscaping and exhibition pavilions, among others.
Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) minister PK Sekar Babu, Tourism minister K Ramachandran and senior officials inspected Island Grounds and told reporters that after reviewing the feasibility of this project, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared. Following the DPR’s approval by Chief Minister MK Stalin, further work ahead of commencement of the project will take place.
The project, which was announced in the Assembly this year during the budget session by former finance minister Palanivel Thiagarajan, is estimated to cost Rs 50 crore.
Sekar Babu said Stalin had instructed that ministers and officials of the concerned departments should carry out an inspection every two months to check the progress of big projects.

“The CMDA in association with the tourism department will take all possible measures to complete this project as soon as possible,” the minister said.
He added that the 30-acre land identified includes a portion of Adyar river and they would carry out works considering the same.
“The exhibitions, recreational facilities, lodges would be set up here at par with global standards. Once these are completed, the facility will greatly benefit not just local residents but also tourists,” Sekar Babu noted.
He added that Stalin had said that at Rs 1,000 crore, the northern part of Chennai would be given a face-lift in three years and the urban square project should be considered a prelude to the overall development plan for North Chennai.
