The body of a nine-year-old girl who went missing last Saturday after going out to play was found in a drain near her house on Tuesday near Solai Nagar in Puducherry.

The police found the girl’s body on Tuesday afternoon wrapped in a cloth inside a drain located near Ambedkar Nagar, a few metres away from her house. Both her hands and feet had been tied.

According to sources, the Muthialpet police have arrested two people, including a 59-year-old and 19-year-old, in connection with the girl’s death and are carrying out further investigation.

The police said the Class 5 student of a government primary school didn’t return after leaving her home on Saturday. As her parents and neighbours could not find her after hours looking for her, they lodged a complaint at the Muthialpet police station on Saturday evening.

Special teams were formed to look for the girl and after analysing several CCTV footage around the area, the police confirmed she hadn’t gone out of the town. Alleging inaction by the police, the girl’s family and neighbours staged a road blockade on Monday leading to tension in the town.

Hundreds of residents soon gathered near the tower clock leading to a slight scuffle between the police and the public.

Despite the assurance by the police and the local MLA, the crowd refused to disperse and this led to a tense standoff between the police and the public. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, deployed in Puducherry for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, were brought in to bring the situation under control, and a few protesters were detained and traffic was regulated.

While speaking to reporters, the family of the victim said on Tuesday the police did not make any efforts to identify the body despite their complaint four days ago. The protesters claimed their children were scared because of the crime and refused to go to school. They urged the police to initiate stringent punishment against the perpetrators and staged protests.

The body of the girl was later taken to the JIPMER for post-mortem examination.
