Seven students of a popular engineering college in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district were arrested on Tuesday by the police for allegedly abusing and humiliating a junior under the pretext of ragging.

According to the police on Wednesday, the victim is a second-year student and a resident of Rayarpalayam in Tiruppur. On Monday night, the senior students walked into his hostel room in the college and asked him for money to buy liquor. After he refused, the seniors picked him up and took him to their room.

All the seven arrested students have been suspended from college.

The senior students then tonsured the victim using a trimmer, abused him and even assaulted him on his hand. They sent him back to his room only the next morning. The students also threatened him not to tell anyone about the incident and that he would be subjected to similar acts if he did so.

However, the student told his parents about the incident.

According to sources, the college administration did not take action immediately following which the student approached the Peelamedu police station on Tuesday and lodged a complaint.

The police conducted an inquiry and found that seven students, including third-year and fifth-year students, were involved in the incident.

The police registered a case under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act as well as under sections 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) threats of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
