Union Home Minister Amit Shah will on Friday launch Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai’s six-month-long padayatra ‘En Mann, En Makkal (My Land, My People)’ in the state’s pilgrim town Rameswaram. Elaborate security arrangements have been made ahead of Shah’s visit to flag off the yatra which, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, will seek a decisive mandate to install party leader Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for a third term.

Shah is expected to arrive at Madurai airport at 4 pm and reach the venue at around 5 pm. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police P Thangadurai said three-tier security is in place and around 2,000 personnel have been deployed across the district ahead of the much-anticipated yatra. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and various other central agencies are also involved in providing security cover, he added.

According to sources, before inaugurating the yatra, Shah will address the cadres at the venue, which is already engulfed in BJP flags and posters. Huge cutouts of BJP leaders have been placed around the stage which has been designed in the shape of the new Parliament building.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Annamalai said, “The campaign will be conducted in five phases. We will cover around 1,700 km on foot and the remaining distance will be covered by a vehicle readied for this padayatra. We have planned to conclude this yatra on January 11, 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.” The state BJP chief aims to cover 234 Assembly constituencies during the yatra. Annamalai noted that the party has also extended invitations to its allies asking them to take part in the yatra.

“We will highlight the achievements of the Prime Minister and seek the people’s support to ensure the return of Modi for a third successive term. We will also explain what the NDA government has done in these nine years for the betterment of the people, constituency-wise,” he said.

The BJP leader noted that about 1 lakh copies of the book titled ‘What Did Modi Do’ will be distributed during the padayatra’s launch event. The party is also planning to host 10 public meetings in major cities during the course of the 168-day padayatra.
