YPS MCA and Saupin’s to battle it out in final

Saupin's School-32,Chandigarh recorded five-wicket win over hosts MCM Blue Caps Cricket Academy in the first semi-final of the Ist MCM Cup for Under-11 played at MCM DAV College Sector 36 in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

On winning the toss,MCM Blue Caps team elected to bat first. Saupin’s bowlers bowled tight spell led by Honey’s brilliant spell (3 for 23) and restricted hosts at small score of 99 runs in 20 overs. Jaswinder (23) and Saiyam (14) were the main contributors for MCM team. Batting second,Saupin’s team achieved the target in 18.1 overs at the loss of five wickets. Opener Abhishek top-scored with 24 runs,while his partner Gurdeep chipped in with useful 20 runs. Both the openers never allowed MCM bowlers to dominate the proceedings and were in total control of the situation.

Meanwhile in the second semi-final,YPS MCA Cricket Academy registered seven-wicket win over Stepping Stone’s Cricket Academy and stormed into the final where they will meet Saupin’s Academy.

After winning the toss Stepping Stones Cricket Academy batted first and with help of Yogesh 64 (58) managed to score 110 in allotted 20 overs. Saurav grabbed three wickets for YPS Academy. In reply,YPS MCA got to the target in 17.2 overs. YPS openers Yuvraj 21(22) and Jaskaran 16 (29) got things rolling for their team and added 46 runs for the first wicket. Thereafter,Anil 32 (29) and Vasu 16 (19) kept the momentum going and enabled their team to win the match.

Karate meet from October 2
* CHANDIGARH: More than 300 players from the northern states will be seen in action during the North India Open Inter-School and Seniors Karate-Do-Championship at St Soldier International School,Sector 28 from October 2 to 4. According to Jagwinder Singh,School Director,martial artists will compete in various kumite and kata categories. Besides these categories they will also compete in various demonstration categories like self defence techniques,jumping front kick and flying side kick. Registration closes on October 2 at 9 am. Shivalik School,Mohali record win
* CHANDIGARH: Shivalik Public School,Mohali players were in full flow as they thrashed St Vivekanand Millennium HMT,Pinjore,3-0 in the boys’ Under-14 category in the CBSE North Zone-I Hockey Tournament held at Shivalik Public School,Sector 41. Harpreet Singh,Gursewak Singh and Maninderpal found the net each to help their team cruise to a comfortable win over their opponents. Meanwhile,in another match,Netaji Model School,Ropar outplayed Ganga International School,Delhi,2-0. Talwinder Singh put the team in lead,while Gursimran Singh consolidated the lead with a stunning effort. In the boys’ Under-19 category,Akal Academy Baru Sahib prevailed over Army School,Akhnoor by a last minute goal from Tejinder Singh. Both the teams got 5 penalty corners each during the match but none of the side was able to convert it into goal. Akal Academy missed a penalty stroke in the 47th minute of the match or else they would have taken the lead much before. The league matches starts from October 1 at Shivalik Public School,Sector 41,Chandigarh and Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 37,Chandigarh.

Rowing trials on October 21
* CHANDIGARH: Trials will be held for the selection of Punjab rowing team on October 21 at 9am at Sukhna Lake for the 30th Junior National Rowing Championships to be held at Alsoor Lake,Bangalore,Karnataka,from November 10 to 15. The competition will be held in men and women categories in Single Scull,Double Scull,Coxless pairs and Coxless Fours. Interested players should bring along their original as well as attested copies of date of birth certificate and Punjab domicile certificate. Entries shall be accepted on the spot itself.

Warm farewell given to Dr Jerath
* CHANDIGARH: Dr C K Jerath,secretary,Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association,was given a farewell party in the college following a successful completion of more than 34 years in the service. Speaking on the occassion,Upkar Krishna Sharma,president of the College Management,lauded the role and meritorious achievements of Dr Jerath,both as a sports administrator and physical education teacher. Dr A C Vaid,principal,college,called him a man of international repute in the field of boxing. Jerath represented the country 19 times as coach,manager,referee,judge,technical official in various international tournaments,both India and abroad. He also accompanied the Indian boxing team as technical advisor during the Beijing Olympics 2008. On the academic front,he proved to be a good teacher,showing almost 100% results of all the classes taught by him.

Rakesh bowls Gully 2 to title win
* PANCHKULA: Buoyed by a four wicket haul from Rakesh (4 for 6),Panchkula Gully 2 thrashed Panchkula Gully 3 by seven wickets in the final to claim the T-10 Gully Cricket “Ab Har Koi Khelega” Season 2 at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium,Sector 3,on Wednesday. After winning the toss,Gully 3 chose to bat first and put on 61 for 7 in the stipulated 10 overs. Harpreet Sunny played an entertaining knock of 30 runs. Rakesh rattled the Gully 3 batsmen with his pace. Chasing the target,Gully 2 achieved the target in 8.1 overs. Harpreet Chatha (24) and Rockey Ratta (19) were their main scorers.

SGGS to meet PU Campus in final
* CHANDIGARH: Sri Guru Gobind Singh College,Chandigarh,crushed SCD College,Ludhiana 38-12 to enter the finals of the Panjab University Inter-College Netball Tournament for Men played at Panjab University grounds on Wednesday. In another semi-final match,hosts Panjab University campus recorded a narrow 24-21 win over GGD SD College,Chandigarh to secure a berth in the final. Earlier,GGD SD College,Chandigarh defeated Government College,Sector 11,by a margin of 30-18 in a quarter-final match.
