Every year on May 31, World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is marked to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

What is the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2023?
This year’s theme is: ‘We need food, not tobacco.’ By focusing on this theme, it calls for promotion of healthier lifestyles, support tobacco cessation efforts, and advocate for policies that prioritise food security and nutrition while combating tobacco use.
What are the effects of tobacco on the heart and respiratory system? Does its consumption increase cancer risk too?
Tobacco consumption causes approximately 80 lakhs worldwide, which is around 5,500 deaths every minute. Around 14 lakh people in India die due to tobacco, which translates to approximately 700 deaths every minute. Tobacco use substantially increases the risk of lung diseases, heart diseases, strokes, and all forms of cancer and premature death. It also increases the chances of developing diabetes and hypertension among individuals. According to WHO, around one in three deaths from cardiovascular diseases are attributed to tobacco use.
Is hookah smoking safe?
It is important to note that the smoke from a hookah contains many of the same toxic chemicals found in cigarettes in increased amounts including tar, carbon monoxide, heavy metals, carcinogens and nicotine. Additionally, the prolonged duration of hookah sessions and shared mouthpieces can increase the risk of infectious diseases.
Are beedis more harmful than smoking a cigarette?
Beedis are commonly believed to be less harmful than regular cigarettes, but this is a misconception. Beedis contain high levels of nicotine and other toxic substances, and their smoke carries similar health risks that are associated with cigarettes. Studies have shown that beedi smoking has links with an increased risk of lung cancer, heart disease, and other health problems.
What are e-cigarettes (vapes) and are they harmless?
Electronic cigarettes, commonly known as vapes, contain nicotine which when heated, produces an aerosol which has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular problems, lung injuries, and nicotine addiction, especially among young people. It is in fact banned in India.
