A 15-day summer camp for mentally challenged children is being organised by Saksham Rehabilitation Center,an NGO,at the Girls Government senior secondary school, sector 15 Panchkula. Planned recently, the workshop is being held free of cost, and around 30 mentally challenged students are participating in it.
We are making efforts to bring out the hidden talents of these children so that despite their disabilities, they are able to overcome their handicap, said Rajneesh Sharma,a member of the NGO. He further added that these children were being taught various forms of art and craft along with singing and dancing. While the NGO has been working in this direction for the past four years, this is for the first time that a workshop is being held to further facilitate this interest, added Sharma.
It was also stated that the NGO is planning to organise a cultural program on the last day of this workshop. Talking to Newsline,19-year-old Nikita said,I like dancing a lot,but rarely get an opportunity to move out. Now I am learning dancing and enjoying the workshop thoroughly.
Similar sentiments were echoed by another student,Hemant (22),who asked for the same camp to be organised every year. The workshop will continue till June 19.
