Woman ends life; husband arrested

A Newly-married woman Poonam,in her early 20s,allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Parol village in Mohali late on Friday evening,the police said today.

Her husband Pappu,in his mid-20s,was arrested under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) on the complaint of her brother Sunil Kumar alias Sonu,Investigation Officer (IO) ASI Tarsem Singh said.

Sonu told the police Poonam was married to Pappu,a worker at a brick kiln,nearly a year ago. Pappu,however,had extra-marital affairs and used to beat and harass her.

On December 14,Poonam called Sonu,who lives in Uttar Pradesh,alleging that Pappu had again thrashed her and was harassing her. I asked her to come to me but she told that Pappu did not allow her to leave his home, Sonu told the police,adding that last night,he got a call from Pappu that Poonam had consumed some poisonous substance and was admitted at the PGIMER.

When Sonu reached PGIMER this morning,Poonam,before breathing last,told him that Pappu had forced her to end her life,said the police.

Pappu has been taken into a one-day police remand,the IO said.
