Witness turns hostile in SP Gira corruption case

A Search at Gira’s residence had yielded around Rs 1.2 crore,stashed in various boxes in different parts of the house and jewellery worth lakhs

An important prosecution witness turned hostile in a case where former Mohali Deputy Superintendent of Police Raka Gira was booked on charges of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Gira was arrested by the CBI on charges of demanding and accepting bribe of one lakh rupees from a builder for settling his case.

Ram Kumar,head constable on Friday deposed before a local court that he has not given any statement to the CBI. He added that CBI used to call him and he met the officials many times but did not give any incriminating statement against Gira.

In his initial statement,Kumar had deposed against the CBI in the corruption case. The CBI had arrested Gira two years ago. CBI had laid a trap after a Mullanpur-based builder K K Malhotra filed a complaint against Gira and arrested her after they found the marked currency at her residence.

The CBI registered a case against Gira on charges of demanding and accepting bribe and booked her under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. The search yielded around Rs 1.2 crore,stashed in various boxes in different parts of the house and jewellery worth lakhs. Also,the CBI found fixed deposits worth Rs 75 lakh and other expensive artefacts.

Gira was inducted by the Punjab Police as an inspector on compassionate grounds after her husband Ranbir Singh,who was a DSP died in a road accident in 1999.
