(Representational image) The cyber cell of Chandigarh Police on Tuesday issued advisory to the public to not entertain any “WhatsApp Pink” link that they receive on their
numbers.
The cyber cell said that the scamsters were sending something called the “WhatsApp Pink” link to users and claiming it to be an additional feature of the WhatsApp green tick. The link, once clicked, helped
fraudsters steal personal information of users, the cyber cell claimed.
WhatsApp green tick is an official green checkmark provided by WhatsApp itself to show a brand’s credibility and trustworthiness.
The advisory released on Tuesday stated, “It has been conveyed to us by several social media agencies that a new trend to commit cyber crime is being used by criminals/scammers by sending messages to WhatsApp user to download a ‘WhatsApp Pink’ link. Actually this WhatsApp pink link is being used by the criminals for tricking users to install a pink themed version of WhatsApp, which steals their personal information and data.”
The advisory further states, “When, any customer downloads WhatsApp Pink via the link sent to them, the sender of the message take access of the data from the customer and easily causes financial losses to them. All the mobile users are requested not to download any WhatsApp pink link sent to them.”
It added that users must spread awareness among their family members and friends about this scam. The mobile users were also requested to share this information about fake WhatsApp Pink in as many groups as possible, by the advisory released by the cyber cell.
