The biggest worry of a gardener is to water his plants, that too just the right volume and pressure. And when it’s summer, there is bound to be excess watering for the fear of injury to plants. With this is associated another worry – spilling water and the resulting ‘water marks’ on the ground. See the accompanying picture. The gardener has judiciously used the base plates. You can place either- plastic shallow plates or earthen ones and these are available with any nursery. They hold the excess water and even supply it back to the plant in the hour of need.
* I have Euphorbia plant of two colours, red and pink. I want to multiply them. How and when should I do it?
Savita,Chandigarh
This is the time when the euphorbia is multiplied. Make a four to six inch long cutting. Let the milk spill and keep the cutting in shade for a day. After it,plant it in the soil, almost half of it underground. The success rate is cent percent.
* My lemon plant leaves have developed white spots. Also, the fruit skin has been damaged, and there’s a paper thin brown skin left. What disease is this and how can it be cured?
Kulbir Singh,Mohali
This is good observation. The damage is due to sun injury. It will correct on its own during rains. However, give it ample light and water your plant twice a week.
* My peach fruit tree is in heavy fruiting. It ripens during second week of May. Please tell how much water I should give as the size of the fruit is not very big. Does watering make a difference?
Ranjana,Panchkula
Size of the fruit is affected by watering. Ranjana, did you do the thinning,i.e. removal of some of the fruit when it was the size of an almond? This also makes a difference. Now,you should irrigate it at least twice a week.
* Some leaves of my kinnow plant are yellowing. What could be the reason? Any remedy?
Surinder,Chandigarh.
If the leaves have green veins then it is zinc deficiency. In that case spray the tree with zinc sulphate, dissolved at three gram to a liter of water.
