As reported by the school the objects had been lying in the school’s biology lab for educational purposes since early 70’s

Why this ‘kolaveri’ about a school
lab’s contents

It is difficult to gauge the motive behind a raid conducted by Delhi-based NGO at a local school for allegedly ‘killing’ and preserving wildlife species. As reported by the school the objects had been lying in the school’s biology lab for educational purposes since early 70’s. During all these years, the authorities must have seen them in almost all schools and colleges, including government institutions. Former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, who heads People For Animals at the national level, said if a school wanted to keep such animals in its lab, then it should obtain a certificate from the Animal Welfare Board of India. The notification uploaded on the official website of Ministry of Environments and Forests states that the objective of the law was to provide protection to endangered flora and fauna, which the school seems to have neither violated nor intended to abuse. I fail to understand how much the animal welfare organisation has helped the nation in curbing the ever rising export racket of such articles. However,it will be better if such NGOs indulged in tackling problems such as overgrowing population of stray dogs and monkeys, instead of obstructing school workings.

Now,schools have to bear the brunt of NGOs

It is startling to see the way how People For Animals (PFA) has started targeting schools by conducting raids. One wonders why universities are not being subjected to a similar treatment, and an all-girls school was targeted during school hours. I fail to understand how specimens kept for many years in jars for educational purposes can give PFA any cause for concern. Most educational institution has such specimen in jars kept for the benefit of students. Now,schools have to bear the brunt of NGOs as well.

Plan to curb traffic on Madhya Marg laudable

The proposed plan of the UT Traffic Police to deal with the problem of parking in the markets on Madhya Marg is laudable. The significant part of the move is to educate traders about the urgency and desirability of parking their cars behind their shops to reduce congestion. The problem of parking in markets is not confined to Madhya Marg. There are various other markets and office complexes in the City Beautiful which should also be taken care of by the Traffic Police. The market on Bridge Road in Sector 17-C is another area where vehicles of traders are parked on the road in front of their shops. At times,it becomes extremely difficult to walk on the road, owing to haphazard parking of cars and two wheelers. The Traffic Police must take cognisance of such violations also.

Standardise speed-breakers the court’s order to the Sirsa district administration to pay a compensation of Rs 5.5 lakh to the family of a road mishap victim, who died due to a speed breaker that was not made as per the required standards, was essential. Such speed breakers can cause serious injuries to drivers and passengers. A large number of non-standard speed breakers have mushroomed in the City Beautiful, under the nose of the administration and the Municipal Corporation, who are unaware of the lurking hazard on the roads. There has been no standardisation in the construction of speed breakers,as a result there are variations in pattern. Moreover, there are no proper indications, warning signs, painting and lights. Most speed-breakers have become a hazard than helping control the speed of vehicles. Authorities concerned must take immediate steps and remove all the non-standard speed breakers.

Take preventive measures to avoid bee sting

A Lot of incidents regarding bee stings have been reported in the past few days. People must follow a few preventive measures. Never disturb or damage beehives. Lodge a complaint at an early stage of formation of beehives,so that appropriate measures to remove them can be taken. In case of a honeybee sting, consult a doctor. The municipal corporation must also keep a regular check to prevent the formation of beehives. Bees and wasps are attracted to bright colours and odours in the environment. People must avoid perfumes, colognes, scented soaps and bright coloured clothes while going out to an area where bees can easily be attracted.
