VIP visitors in attendance

Recently, when the Punjab and Haryana High Court chief justice was admitted in the PGI,there was a horde of visitors who kept on visiting him for the two days that he remained in the hospital. Those who came to see him included political bigwigs like the chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana and babus from both the administrations. In fact,PGI had not seen so many VIP cars with red beacon parked together in the recent past. Notwithstanding the board which had “visitors not allowed” clearly written in the corridor — leading to the room where the Chief justice was admitted — senior IAS officers from UT,Punjab and Haryana did not leave an opportunity to register their presence even if it caused inconvenience to the regular patients at the hospital.

Sudden leave

High Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi’s sudden leave left the lawyers guessing. Most of them assumed that Gogoi has been called by the Supreme Court collegium for his elevation. The “suspicion” grew stronger after the chief justice’s staff also stated that they did not know the reason behind his sudden leave. It took some time for the news to reach them, from a well informed lawyer, that Gogoi was not well and was admitted in PGI.

Anna Effect

After Anna Hazare went on hungerstrike to raise the demand for Jan Lokpal Bill, similar strikes have become a fad even in Chandigarh. Whether it is the demand to get a community centre vacated or getting houses outside Lal Dora regularised, residents are opting for strikes in various areas. Some, who are not sure if they will be able to sustain a continuous hunger strike, are giving up food on alternate days.

A ‘possessive’ mistake

The “over possessive” attitude for his girlfriend almost landed a Panjab University student of law behind the bars. The incident happened recently when a resident of the university girls’ hostel did not answer repeated calls from her boyfriend late at night. Getting paranoid, the boy decided to check it out himself. Though his attempts to scale the walls and getting into the girls’ hostel proved futile,as he was spotted by the security guards,he was successful in fleeing the spot. But the guards noted down the registration number of his car. An inquiry into the incident showed that he was a university student. The authorities summoned him along with his parents the next day. “He explained that it was only the concern for his girlfriend that made him sneak inside the hostel. He seemed to be from a nice family and seeing his parents apologising,we decided to let him go and not register any case,” said a university official.
