Dasa scheme*Citizenship cards of students to be sent to Nepal Embassy
Even a month after fraudulent admissions in the PEC University of Technology under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme was exposed, the process of verification of documents of all students under the scheme continues.
In a recent move to ensure no other student forges documents, the institute would get the verification of all the Nepal citizenship cards done from the Nepal Embassy. As per the institute records,at present there are as many as 25 students with Nepal citizenship cards or identity cards in Bachelor of Engineering (BE). These include all the students from first to fourth year. These documents are already in the possession of the PEC University of Technology as it had earlier asked all the students under this scheme to submit their original documents including passports or citizenship cards with the authorities.
The original passports have been returned to students after verification, both,by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Even the original passports of those students who could not submit them are being returned to them after verification. The institute is not keeping the original passports of the students. But the Nepal citizenship cards would be forwarded to the Nepal Embassy for verification. This step has been taken in the wake of the recent incident where all the eleven students under DASA scheme had fake Nepal identity cards who were later terminated from the institute. Though the institute had verified these identity cards, still we don not want to take any chance and these would be forwarded in a day or two to the Nepal Embassy, said one of the senior officials at PEC.
This is also considered as a part of the exercise involving suspicion by both the institute as well as CBI of involvement of more students with fraudulent documents (especially Nepal citizenship cards). As the institute, authorities have been saying that if the students managed to get admission on the basis of fake documents, there is every possibility that there could be similar cases in the previous years too.
While PEC was suspicious over admission of some students and sent the first communication to NITK Surathkal (entrusted with the central coordination of admission) and Ministry of Human Resource and Development (controls the admissions under DASA scheme) since August 13,as many as eleven students were finally under the CBI and PEC scanner on September 8,where there Nepal identity cards were found to be fake. These eleven students were booked by CBI and also consequently expelled from the institute on September 10.
Of 175 students under the DASA scheme in PEC University of Technology,58 seats or 15 per cent of total intake above the total normal seats were reserved for DASA scheme this year. Out of total 58 seats, only 53 were filled by the foreign nationals/PIOs/NRIs. This was the highest number of admissions recorded by the institute under this scheme which was introduced in 2006. Recently, after eleven admissions were cancelled by the institute when the documents were found to be forged, finally there are only 38 students left this year under this scheme as admissions of three students were later cancelled who failed to register themselves.
