A presentation was made to the UT administrator on Tuesday
After the failure of most of the mega projects proposed for the city, the UT Administration seems to be making attempts to revive the Medicity project. Officials gave a presentation to the UT Administrator Shivraj Patil on Tuesday informing him about the details of the project. Medicity had run into trouble in 2008 after UT Advisor Pradip Mehra had raised objections over the valuation of the 45 acres of prime land for the project, costing over Rs 2,000 crore,at Rs 203.70 crore. This had led to a tussle between the then UT administrator General S F Rodrigues (Retd) and the advisor. The advisor had also questioned the revenue model of public-private participation being pushed by the administrator.
A public interest litigation had been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court after which the Administration had decided to invite fresh Expression of Interest. The project had also been under the central vigilance commission (CVC) scanner. The Administration had planned for a number of facilities to be provided under the project. These included a superspeciality hospital cum-recuperation centre,a charity hospital,a nursing college with free nursing education to 300 students per year and a medical college. The Medicity was also proposed to have a health centre with different streams of medicine like ayurveda, homeoepathy and unani. A centre for research in treatment of thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia as well as a dental hospital-cum-college and a terminal care centre were also planned.
While the original site for Medicity was at Raipur Kalan,it was later decided to shift it near the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park in Manimajra.
An official of the Administration said that the Administrator was today given an update about the project. He added that no decision has yet been taken about the future of the project.
