Chandigarh is ahead of other states and union territories in parameters like drinking water supply,drainage system and possession of computers. There is a marked urbanisation as from 24 villages in 2001 there are just five left now. A sharp increase is witnessed in the households possessing telephones and television sets,as per the data on Houses,Household Amenities and Assets,prepared by the Census Department.
The data,released by UT Advisor K K Sharma on Friday,shows there are a total of 2,98,367 houses in the city and 2,35,061 households. Of the total houses,2,89,456 are in the urban areas and the remaining in the rural. As many as 93.3 per cent houses were found occupied. Of the total households,47.7 per cent are owned and 47 per cent are rented.
As many as 96.7 per cent of the households have access to tap water. The availability of tap water has increased both in the rural and urban areas. For the first time,data has been collected for people using treated and untreated water. As many as 86.2 per cent households have source of water within the premises. As much as 11.7 per cent have to fetch water from a source located within 500 metres in rural area and 100 metre in the urban area.
There is an increase in the percentage of cars possessed by the residents in the past 10 years. From 15.4 per cent households having cars,jeeps and vans in 2001,the numbers stand at 25.7 per cent in 2011. The people with bicycles is witnessing a decline while there is a marginal increase in the percentage of people possessing a two- wheeler.
As many as 98.4 per cent of the households have access to electricity. Kitchen facility is available with 96.3 per cent of the residents. While 21.9 per cent people use kerosene,5.1 per cent make use of firewood,cow dung,etc.
The city residents like being well-connected. As many as 89.2 per cent of the households possess telephones. This is a marked increase from 32.1 per cent of the households having a telephone in 2001. Interestingly,just 7.9 per cent of the rural households had telephones in 2001 as compared to 88.3 per cent at present. The households with television sets also witnessed an increase corresponding with a decline in those possessing radio or transistor.
The households with television sets have increased from 73.9 per cent in 2001 to 82.5 per cent.
More than 80 per cent of the households avail banking facilities. The city stands third among the union territories in this parameter. Around 33.2 per cent of the households have a computer or a laptop with 18.8 per cent having Internet facility.
