A tatal of nine candidates will be in the fray for the elections of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) from the city. Chandigarh has one SGPC seat and the elections are scheduled for September 18.

Of the 11 candidates who had filed nominations, two withdrew on Friday. Among those who withdrew their nomination was Gurpratap Singh Riar of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Riar had won the last SGPC elections in 2004 after he contested as an independent. The other candidate was Manvinder Singh Giaspura who withdrew nomination and extended support to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD),Chandigarh, president Gurnam Singh.

There are more than 12,500 voters for the SGPC elections of which the majority are in Manimajra.

Gurnam Singh will be campaigning for the election and has raised the issue of improper use of golak (cash box). He said that the offerings at the gurdwaras are being misused. “There is corruption and fake bills are being made,” said Gurnam Singh.

The other candidate in the fray is former Mayor and councillor of the MC,Harjinder Kaur, who is a member of SAD. She said,“All efforts will be made to generate employment opportunities among the youth and keep them away from drugs.”

Another candidate in the fray is Baljit Singh Khalsa, who alleged that bogus votes were being made for the SGPC elections. However, when asked by the Additional District Commissioner to submit an affidavit on the matter,he refused.
