(Source: Express Photo by Sahil Walia)From brainstorming sessions, cultural programmes to an international symposium, the UT Administration has lined up a number of events to celebrate the legacy of Le Corbusier, whose 50th death anniversary falls on August 27, over the next two months. The administration released the itinerary on Thursday.
The celebrations will kick start with a photography competition on August 24, which is open to both amateur and professional photographers. A series of events have been planned for August 27, the day of his death anniversary, with a quiz competition and lectures by the city’s eminent architects at the Chandigarh College of Architecture being prominent among them. Addressing the media, Secretary (Tourism) Anurag Agarwal said the administration was also working on a light and sound show to be staged on the day at the government museum, which will depict key moments of Le Corbusier’s life.

The Department of Post will also release two special day covers – one with Capitol Complex in its backdrop and the other of Le Corbusier’s art work.
The major event on his death anniversary will be the launch of ‘Chandigarh Samvaad’ from Sector 17, in which officials will hold discussions with residents on issues like security and infrastructure. These talks will then be held every second week in pre-announced locations and the final summary will be put before experts, for practical solutions, during an International symposium in October.
The day will also see the release of a booklet on Chandigarh’s history which will be introduced as part of the Class VI curriculum in the city’s government schools. It will, however, be a reference book and will not be used for academic evaluation.
Symposium from October 9-11
The Chandigarh administration will hold an international symposium, between October 9 and 11, that will see the participation of academic experts from abroad as well India for a detailed discussion on the contributions of this prominent 20th-century architect. The road ahead for city as well as urbanisation in the country will also be one of the key themes in this international event.
William J R Curtis, an architectural historian who has written a number of books on Le Corbusier, will start the symposium with a keynote address from the Open hand monument in the Capitol Complex Several prominent academicians including Rahul Mehrotra, chairperson of Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, Michel Richard, director of the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris, Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi and Raj Rewal will participate in the technical sessions.
