The district police has arrested two persons who facilitated the Sonepat jailbreak in which eight dreaded criminals made a sensational escape by scaling the 20-ft high boundary wall of the jail on Wednesday morning.

The two accused, identified as Amit and Sumit, were released from the Sonepat jail on bail on January 9.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police,Sonepat,Surinder Malik,Amit faced trial in 13 cases of murder in Haryana and 12 in Uttar Pradesh while Sumit was facing trial in a murder case in Haryana.

“Both are hardened criminals, but got released on bail. Our investigations so far revealed that before getting released on bail,Amit and Sumit had got close to those who now escaped from the jail and supplied them mobile phones,” said the DSP.

Three jail warders — Pawan,Surender and Suresh — had already been arrested on charges of negligence.

“So far, there is no direct evidence to indicate that the jail staff had connived with the accused. But,yes, they were negligent in performing their duties. That’s why they were arrested and subsequently suspended,” Malik added.
