Trying to stop a fight,cops assaulted

Two constables of the Punjab police were assaulted when they tried to stop a fight between two rival groups of youths in Kharar on late Thursday night.

Two constables of the Punjab police were assaulted when they tried to stop a fight between two rival groups of youths in Kharar on late Thursday night. Both cops were badly thrashed,beaten with batons and rods,their uniforms were torn off and their mobile phones were snatched,the police said.

Though the assailants managed to flee from the spot in their open jeep later,they themselves surrendered before the police on Friday morning and were produced before a local court for remand in 14-day judicial custody,said Investigating Officer Barma Singh.

Around 11.15 pm on Thursday,constables Avtar Singh and Ravi Kumar were on their routine night patrol duty,when they tried to intervene and stop some youths fighting near the Khalsa Senior Secondary School. This provoked one of the groups,who then launched an attack on cops.

The assailants were identified as Parpinder Singh,Amritpal Singh,Sushant Gautam,Vishal Katoch,Aman Kumar and Amanpreet Singh,all in their mid-20s and residents of Kharar. They were booked under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty),186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions),148 (rioting,armed with deadly weapons) and 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the IPC.
