To save unborn daughters,Punjab set to follow Maharashtra’s footsteps

Punjab is set to follow the model adopted by Maharashtra to save its unborn daughters.

Punjab is set to follow the model adopted by Maharashtra to save its unborn daughters. It is on its way to introduce a software called Silent Observer, which will record information concerning all untrasounds conducted in the state.

The software is currently operational in Maharashtra’s Kohlapur and a team of health officials — led by Minister for Health Laxmi Kant Chawla who visited the district last week — have returned highly impressed. Chawla was accompanied by Principal Secretary (Health) Satish Chandra,Managing Director of National Rural Health Mission Krishan Kumar and Director of Department of Family Welfare,Ashok Nayyar.

“This software was introduced by the Kohlapur DC on his own. The male to female sex ratio of Mahrashtra had deteriorated over the last decade — it had fallen from 913 girls against 100 boys to 839 girl against 100 boys. However, after the introduction of this software, the ratio now is 849 girls against 1,000 boys,” said Chandra.

Buoyed by the success of the software worth Rs 25,000,the Maharashtra government has extended this programme to four districts in 2010. This year, the programme has been introduced in the whole state.

Chandra said: “This software is to be loaded in each ultrasound machine. The machine records details of each of ultrasound done and the information is sent to the office of Civil Surgeon. If someone tries to temper with the record, the authorities will be immediately notified. It can even record the images of the ultrasounds.”

“In Maharashtra, while the cost of the software was borne by radiologists,in case of Punjab,we have enough fund to install the software. The Centre has given us funds to improve the sex ratio of the state,” he added.
