The Chandigarh Administration ordered the installation of global positioning systems (GPS) and surveillance cameras in school buses on Tuesday. However, some schools had already taken the initiative and had installed the same. But the extra fee charged for these facilities shows wide variation, while one school does not charge anything.
The schools that have GPS and cameras installed in the buses are Carmel Convent in Sector 9, St John’s School in Sector 26, and Shemrock Public School in Mohali. The last one is providing the facilities free. St John’s claims it was the first school in the city to install CCTV cameras and GPS systems.
Principal Kavita Das said, “Around March end, we started the process, and the systems were functional by the second week of April. All 18 buses of the school have cameras and GPS systems.”
The school authorities are in the process of developing a GPS-based system which will allow parents to track the movement of the school bus in which their child is traveling on a mobile phone.
At present, messages are sent to parents in case there is any change in the timings of the school bus. Both school authorities and bus operators have the contact numbers of parents.
The school does not have any system of live monitoring of the buses through cameras. “The cameras store video recordings of last 15 days. The purpose is that in case anything occurs, we have the camera recording to see what exactly had happened,” said the principal.
The school had collected a one-time payment of Rs 100 from parents.
Carmel Convent installed GPS in all 25 buses in the first week of May, cameras will be installed by July1. The school has collected a one-time charge of Rs 2,000 from parents.
The cameras will be used to monitor the buses from office. The school has launched a mobile application which allows parents to monitor and track the school buses. The app provides information about the bus’s location, its time of arrival and departure, speed, and when it would approach a stoppage.
Shemrock Public School Principal S K Sharma said they had appointed a transport manager and an administrative counsellor “who keep track of buses and monitor the CCTV cameras. A message is delivered to parents when the bus enters their neighbourhood.”
