This year,PU to offer OCET,CET applications online

To address complaints of delay,private candidates will be sent roll numbers via Internet.

Panjab University is all set to revamp the application process for Common Entrance Test (CET) and Other Common Entrance Test (OCET) exams,which offer admission to over 50 courses.

Initiating it as an experiment for online applications and of roll numbers,the Panjab University is all set to introduce online availability of Detailed Mark Certificates (DMCs) for these entrance tests and roll numbers which can be downloaded from this session. Also,the Optical Mark Reading (OMR) scanning of entrance test applications will be replaced with online data capture from the coming academic session.

Beginning as an experiment for online applications and display of roll numbers,the Panjab University is going to introduce online availability of Detailed Mark Certificates (DMCs) for these entrance tests and roll numbers which can be downloaded from this session. Also,the Optical Mark Reading (OMR) scanning of entrance test applications will be replaced with online capture of data from the coming academic session.

“The software for this has already been developed by the University computer centre. From this year’s entrance examinations,it will be put to use. All the entrance tests would be applied online except MD and MS courses for which there are hardly 60-70 seats offered by the Government Medical Hospital and College,Sector 32,” said the Controller of Examinations A K Bhandari.

Thousands of candidates apply for these post graduate and undergraduate courses every year. Among these,the popular ones include MCA,LLM,five-year integrated BA-LLB,M Com,ME,M Tech,regular M Sc and M Sc honours in different subjects including Computer Science,Chemistry and others.

While under CET honours courses for science subjects and dental are offered. The entrance forms for these courses are available by March-April while the entire admission process is completed by the University by July-August.

In addition to the online application for entrance examinations,this year,the university is also experimenting with online application forms for admission of private candidates. The candidates have to fill the admission form online,get the print out of the receipt confirming the application and then send this attested slip to the University.

Also,availability of online roll numbers for private candidates will be introduced from December examinations,this year. This has been devised in order to do away with the common problem of delay in roll numbers and candidates complaining of not receiving the roll numbers at all. To initiate with,private candidates for MA-I courses will be offered this service where they can download their roll numbers online,sitting at their home.

“The University receives several complaints from the private candidates about delay in roll numbers. Thus,they approach the University examination branch. To solve,this problem,we will introduce online availability of roll numbers for them. Subsequently this will be available for other courses and regular students as well. Initially,as a trial,around 15,000-20,000 under MA first year courses will be offered this facility,” added Bhandari.

On an average,the Panjab University has a total strength of around 2-2.5 lakh students of which around 1 lakh are under private courses.
