If one were to list out popular combinations, both in terms of flavours and sales, then beer with pizza would probably rank very high up. So it’s a bit surprising that it took Hops ‘n’ Grains,a microbrewery in Panchkula,so long to introduce pizza in their otherwise exhaustive menu. Nevertheless, the Italian staple is now available—in a mixed line-up of green as well as meatier versions.

We arrived on a sultry albeit early evening and found the brewery buzzing with action. Sans the basement, the two upper levels were well occupied and rock music added to the peppy mood. Given the huge interiors, finding a table here never takes long. We chose Level 2,which was more private, and headed straight for the order.

What goes both in favour as well as against the new pizza menu is that it is predictable — with Pepperoni,Margherita,Paneer Tikka,Barbecue,Hawaiian…you get the drift. But knowing well that it’s the beer that’s the real star here,it’s not a bad idea to pair it with thin crust and hand-tossed pizzas.

On the recommendation of the owner,Amritanshu,we chose to savour the Chicago Style Pizza (Rs 300) and an Exotic Veggie Pizza (Rs 275) along with their freshly brewed beer. The highlight,so far at the pub,has been the beer, brewed fresh and made from German hops,Australian barley and yeast from France. All the ingredients are put together through various brewing processes, the result of which is four types of lager beer—premium, dark, wheat and light.

We sipped on a large mug of light beer, which was just what it claimed—light and fresh. The pizza service was quick and the order arrived well within the waiting time. Though the pizza crust was really thin in comparison to regular ones, the toppings were fairly generous. The Chicago Style Pizza had a mix of chicken, ham, salami, sausages with bell peppers and olives.

The veggie variant was plump on top, with asparagus, zucchini, bell peppers, artichoke, baby corns, olives and loads of mozzarella.

The flavours were spot-on,but we would have liked a larger size on the plate. The pizzas are more medium-sized,and there’s no size variation on the menu yet. Also, some new pizza combinations would make the visit more worthwhile.
