The journey continues,over still and rough waters,as Bittu Sandhu weaves lifes elementary experiences in her verses in Safina,her first poetry book in Hindi. The poems are an ode to all those women,jisne samjhaya,samjha,lekin use koi samajh na paya. Loving and losing,trials and tribulations,highs and lows,the words flow without any inhibitions,straight from the heart. Poetry comes naturally to me, smiles Bittu,who read verses from Safina,written in both Hindi and Urdu,at a function at CII on Saturday evening. This ones a labour of love,taking nine years to be born and the inspiration has been all around her. A woman creates,conforms,bears,but says less,when you smile,the world smiles with you,but a tear,even your own eye refuses to accept, the poems are an expression of her innermost feelings. Published by Rajkamal,artist and writer Imroze has embellished each poem with his artistic work,the poetry is rich in thought and emotion,precisely why I chose to draw, smiles Imroze,who has also given the title of the book,Safina (kishti). While Gurdas Mann dedicated a verse to Bittu,Suchitra Mitra enacted three of her poems on stage,overwhelmed by the touching Nanhe Paun which is a heart-rending verse on female foeticide,with music director Atul Sharma lending music to the words. This could not have been possible without the support of family,friends and of course,the publishers,who took only three hours to get back to me with a yes, Bittu says the proceeds from the sales of the book would go to the Rani Breast Cancer Trust,which is run for poor patients.
