It is Shakespeares shortest tragedy,a play about a regicide and its aftermath. Macbeth has attracted some of the greatest actors in the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and the plays been adapted to film,television,opera,novels,comic books…And now,the students of the Department of Indian Theatre,Panjab University,are staging Macbeth on Monday evening at the Department at 6.30 pm. With a cast of 30,Macbeth has been directed and designed by Chakresh,a final-year student of the Department. Weve been rehearsing for a month and from the costumes to the sets,its all at a grand scale, smiles Chakresh,who recently directed a play for the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi Festival. Macbeth,admits Chakresh is a tough play,but it was the challenge that makes the production so special,whats more its in Hindi,English,Punjabi and Haryanvi. Though I have edited the script,weve made sure that none of the aspects of the play have been left untouched and the design is so offbeat that the audience will love the feel of it, Chakresh credits his cast and friends for making it all possible. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are characters which will appeal at any time and age and how we can go to any level to achieve our ambition is what we see and feel in the play and as I am a huge fan of Shakespeare,this play is special, says the director.

A mix of contemporary and folk music,with live nagadas,the director has followed no pattern,but has strived to experiment with thoughts,presentation,imagination,feel. The play is like a festival,from the start to the end. Like in a festival,you meet many people and you relate the psychology of others,here too its the same. Watch on!
