Upholding an order of the Jalandhar district forum, the UT State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed the Telecommunication department to pay Rs 10,000 compensation for disconnecting a telephone connection despite timely payment of bill.
Sampuran Singh,a resident of Jalandhar, stated in his complaint that his landline phone was disconnected on July 7,2001,for the alleged non- payment of bill between February 1,2001 and March 31,2001.
The complainant said he had duly paid the bill and had the receipt. The officials,he said, did not refer to the payment record and his connection was wrongly disconnected. The department said the connection was restored after receiving a complaint. The Jalandhar district forum allowed the complaint by directing the telecom department to pay Rs 10,000 compensation for deficiency in service.
After the case was transferred from the Punjab Consumer Commission to the UT,its president Justice KC Gupta observed that the department should have made careful scrutiny of the payments before disconnecting.
