The Panjab University (PU) teachers will pay Rs 1,000 each as their contribution for the construction of the memorial to be built on the campus to mark 130 years of its existence.
The varsity has around 650 teachers. The authorities will get Rs 6.5 lakhs for the construction of the memorial. Though the general body meeting of the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) has approved that Rs 1,000 will be contributed, the issue will be discussed once again in its executive meeting to be held in the near future.
We were asked about whether each teacher should give one days salary or pay Rs 1,000 per head. In PUTAs general house meeting we have approved the idea of Rs 1,000 but still we want to discuss the matter with the teachers as we know decisions are difficult when money is involved, said PUTA president Mohammed Khalid while talking to Chandigarh Newsline.
It is learnt that the memorial will come in an area lying somewhere near the Computer Centre Department of the varsity.
In accordance with the design prepared by the varsitys architect unit, the monument will have three white marble pedestals facing each other,on a black granite hexagon. The two pedestals on the sides will be representing years of the varsity before and after the independence while the central pedestal will represent the varsitys growth and development.
Harpreet Singh, head of the Architecture Office said that the design has been finalised, but cannot say when the construction will start.
It is good to have a memorial but what purpose will it serve? The authorities should have to think of something else which will benefit the students and teachers, said one of the senior professors, requesting anonymity.
