(Representative/Express Photo) The teachers of 136 colleges in Punjab and Chandigarh have decided to observe this year’s Teachers’ Day (Tuesday) as ‘Black Day’ as a mark of protest against Punjab government, which, according to them, has failed to look into their (colleges) problems. They will hold a protest for two hours.
In a press release issued on Monday, the aggrieved teachers alleged that officials and departments concerned are not following the directives of the Punjab government.
They said that college professors were delighted when on September 5, 2022, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission after a delay of six years. A notification to that effect was also issued by the Cabinet on September 29, 2022, and Mann had announced that from October 1, 2022, salaries would be paid according to this (new) scale. But till date things have remained only on paper.
They said that Mann should ask his Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains to check the ground reality as to why these government offices are not following his (CM’s) orders.
The release said college professors have been working on Rs 21,600 scale, facing mental problems; the government has reduced the grant from 95% to 75% for the aided colleges which has led to several problems in colleges.
