A workshop, aimed at training school teachers in the English Language, was organised on Sunday at the British Library here. Titled Teaching Writing Skills, the workshop sought to provide a medium for informed discussion of the principles and practice determining the ways in which the English language is taught and learnt.
Prof. Deepti Gupta,Department of English,Panjab University and a freelance professional was the resource person for the workshop. The basic aim of this workshop was on using British Librarys,English Language Training (ELT) resources effectively for teaching English and to discuss attitudes towards teaching-writing,to discuss different types of writing activities teachers can perform in the classroom and how these relate to the real world.
The focus was also on discussing potential problems that may arise while teaching writing skills. The other aims included issues of accuracy Vs fluency, approaches to error correction, the various stages of a writing lesson and the guided writing process.
Each group planned and presented a writing activity. The ideas which were discussed for helping students with the writing process included getting students to discuss their ideas in pairs or groups, showing pictures to students to generate ideas and pre-teaching some useful vocabulary. The writing exercise should be made interesting to the students and they should be asked to be more creative while writing.
Also, the students must be encouraged to use dictionaries and be made to evaluate each others work which would give them more ideas for improving their writing.
Bipin Kumar,Manager,British Library informed that British Library,in association with Middlesex University,UK is organising Management Week from 7-12 September for students and working professionals. He also informed that British Library is also re-opening their membership during this week.
