Chandigarh’s chess wizard,Tarini Goyal finished fourth in the under 11 Girls category in the maiden edition of the National Schools Chess Championship which concluded in New Delhi on Thursday. While the Asian Chess Federation has been organising the Asian Schools Chess Championship for a long time, the All India Chess Federation has introduced a National level tournament specifically for school children for the first time. Tarini, who is a Class VI student of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, adjusted well to the new time control format of 60 minutes without increment as against the normal time format where each player gets 90 minutes along with a 30-second increment for each move, thus giving each player almost two hours to fight it out on the board. In the nine-game tournament,Tarini won three games and drew five games including holding the top seed R Vaishali of Tamil Nadu to a draw.

Her elder sister,Arunima Goyal, also from Sacred Heart, finished sixth in the under 15 girls category of the Tournament. While Arunima played some outstanding games against players who participated from all over the country, she could not manage to get past the girls from Tamil Nadu who bagged the top five positions.
