Even as cases of marital discord are rising,all of them do not end up in separation. In fact,close to 50 per cent of the cases that reach the Women and Child Support Unit (WCSU) here are solved through compromise.
Of the 1,164 complaints disposed of by the WCSU in 2009,as many as 468 40 per cent resulted in a compromise with the help of expert guidance of counsellors and psychologists.
The cell received as many as 1,283 complaints last year and apart from them as many as 59 cases were registered during the year,out of which 49 cases were cleared.
Most complaints reaching the Cell range from incidents of marital discord,which involve differences between the spouses,family disputes,dowry demands and differences between the woman and her mother-in-law.
Of the cases where dowry demands were involved,dowry articles were returned in as many as 203 cases. The family counselling centre,which was set up in March 2003 with the help of the Social Welfare Board,takes the help of psychologists to offer effective counselling services and resolve the disputes amicably.
The more complicated cases,where emotions run deep,are handled by the counsellng centre with help of experts and the investigating officer who are empathetic and impartial while approaching the case, said an official at WCSU. In one case,the wife had a problem with her husband not maintaining order in the house and throwing clothes here and there. Such incidents had taken a toll on them and bickering became instense that the complaint landed up with us. We tell such couples to adjust with each other, an investigating officer said.
