Sukhna Lake can be filled by pumping water from its catchment area through tubewells or by identifying suitable water source points like the Bhakra Dam. This is one of the measures that the committee on conservation and management of the Sukhna explored during a meeting with the aim of tackling the problem of decreasing water level in the lake.
The minutes of the meeting form part of the affidavit that was submitted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court by the UT today. The affidavit also consists of the progress report submitted by National Institute of Hydrology,Roorkee, for the July-September quarter.
As per the minutes of the meeting, the members discussed that as the Sukhna is rain-fed,there is a possibility of it not getting fully filled in case there is less rainfall in any particular monsoon season. It was opined that other measures to fill it could be explored. But experts term the proposed exercise highly expensive and futile.
Former Punjab Irrigation Department Chief Engineer G S Dhillon said,Fetching water from the Bhakra Dam would be very expensive. Instead, the excess water from the water treatment plants that goes waste, should be diverted to the lake. The catchment map of the Sukhna Lake has been digitised.
