Sukhbir asks PM to relax Indo-Pak visa norms

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take necessary steps to revisit and liberalise the provisions of the proposed trade and visa protocol between India and Pakistan to enable genuine visitors from both sides to be a part of the people-to-people contact between the two countries and give trade relations between the two countries a new fillip.

In a letter to the Prime Minister on Wednesday evening, ahead of the home secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan to finalise the trade/visa protocol between the two countries,he said that “the highly unrealistic and counter productive age-restrictions of 12 years and 65 years imposed in the proposed protocol” are restrictive and defeat the spirit of the purpose for which the exercise is being undertaken.

On provisions relating to norms for trade visa,he took strong exception to the clauses of the trade protocol, which he said “appeared to be tailored to suit only the big business houses on either side of the border”. “Limiting multiple entry visas to business houses with a high annual turnover is discriminatory,as this will deny small entrepreneurs, traders, farmers etc the opportunity of benefitting from the opening up of the liberalized trade regime,” said Sukhbir. He also called for a major downscaling of the turnover limits “to enable small and medium businessmen and traders to make use of the improved ties between the two countries”.

He further urged the Prime Minister to consider a liberal visa-on-arrival facility for the pilgrims, seriously sick, patients with special ailments and their dependents, the disabled,“special needs” category persons.
